New work by Tighnabruaich Gallery favourite Lesley McLaren goes on show for month of April
AN Argyll gallery at the end of what has been called ‘the most scenic drive in Scotland’ is about to showcase a new body of work by one of their most popular artists, Lesley McLaren.
Borders-based Lesley, who has worked as an archaeological illustrator and a childrens’ book brings elements of both fields into her beautifully painted landscapes and still-lifes.
Using her everyday life as a backdrop for her paintings, Lesley draws inspiration from everything from the robin which visits her studio every day to the sheep out in the field or the pot of flowers at the window.
“The best work often emerges after days of mistakes, hair pulling, sometimes tears and endless scrubbing out,” she says.
“It can be torturous and something which is not easily shared, then – a wee chink of light appears on the canvas as though it had always been there, mischievously holding back the answer.”
Gallery owner Penny Graham-Weall says: “Our clients love Lesley’s work and I’m sure these new paintings will be much sought-after. She often combines a lovely gentle landscape with unexpected curiosities in the foreground. Delightful is a good word I think!”
